How to get MP3 working in Audacity

Audacity is a music recording program that's available for installation through the software repositories. Many Ubuntu users like to export their Audacity recordings to MP3 but get confused when they've already installed the liblame0 package and aren't able to use it in Audacity. Assuming you've already installed liblame0 or libmp3lame0, follow these steps to get it working with Audacity.

Note: If you don't know what a repository or software package is, or how to install Audacity or libmp3lame0 read this guide to installing software. If you can't find libmp3lame0 in Add/Remove, try Synaptic Package Manager.

In Audacity, go to Edit > Preferences

Under File Formats then MP3 Export Setup, click Find Library

You'll then get this message. Click Yes to locate the library.

The subsequent dialogue box will begin looking for only libmp3lame.so.

Since you want libmp3lame.so.0 instead of libmp3lame.so, click on the drop-down menu and select All Files (*) instead.

Select libmp3lame.so.0 from the file list and click OK

When you get this confirmation, click Yes

You should now be able to export recordings from Audacity to MP3 files.
